kai-tuttu

Second story on food:
Kai-tuttu
In our old house we had a big garden. In that garden we had two guava trees ,one cashew-nut tree among
many others..lot of rose shrubs..and we had two benches and right beside one of them was a paarijaatha tree.
More often than not,you would find me sitting on that bench with the fragrance of paarijatha flowers
tickling my senses..with a book in my hand.
Some times in the night,my mom would put “kai-tuttu ” for us…telling us stories from “kathamrutha”.
sitting in front of the tulsikatte under the moonlight (and streetlight)….with the soft sounds of breeze rustling
under the rose shrubs..we would let our mom create fantasy lands with stories abt fishes of gold..or rakshsas who had
their lives in the heart of parrot..or brave princes who would sail seven seas to save their lady love.
If I close my eyes..I can still transport myself back to those times..the smell of roses and parijaatha..as fresh as ever.
We would have tuttu of saaranna first and then mosranna with upinakaayi or chutnipudi. The stories
my mom narrated would transport me into a world where everything was vividly colorful..all men brave..and all women ravishing!
However delicious and exotic the food we taste in hotels is…it cannot simply compare to kai-tuttu from your Mom’s hands.
And we would always fight for the last morsel..which according to me is the best of all tutthus!!!
Even now, when during weekends I go back to mysore I cajole my mom into putting kai-tutthu for us..just like when I was a child
And she willingly obliges..but now its me who tells her stories in between gobbling the tuttus…and she who listens wide-eyed!
hehe…my Ajji used to put kai-tutthu sometimes. My cousins used to come over during vacations..and it was fun. Do you remember at the end “bhagyavantha” or something?
…We used to fight for the last morsel (literally!) haha!
The fragrance of parijaatha..literally intoxicates me!
Sigh!What lovely days…

Though there were lot of “kai tuttu” sessions in my home when I was a kid, I used to skip most of them! Somehow, I used to be very restless waiting for my turn for the next ‘tuttu’.

“everything was vividly colorful..all men brave..and all women ravishing!”
Now I know who is responsible for your ever on going hunt for the “knight in shining armor” :p …
No idea what you meant by ‘Kai-tuttu’ tho’ :D… Hehe.. am juz kidding, but it didn’t strike me at first shot I’ll tell you that.
[...] The first of these stories, “gastronomic pleasures” spoke about my family get-togethers in Davangere. In the same series I had written about fighting for the last spoon of “kesari-bath” with my friends, eating chaat and discussing boys on Bangalore roads and the childhood joy of kai-tuttus! [...]
