Take my advice…be wary of suggesting a movie to some loved one…you may just jeopardize
what might be a beautiful relationship…if not that drastic atleast it might leave a dent in their opinion about your levels of sanity..
I have been guilty of suggesting the wrong kind of movies to some of my loved ones myself…I think my cousin lost some of his trust on my taste in movies when I told him Pretty Woman was amazing! now he thinks I am just a dreamy romantic fool…underneath my sensible facade
Now,for me “Pretty Woman” is a very good movie..it never fails to lift my spirits up and I have
no qualms in believing that this world is strange enough for a millionaire to fall in love with a call girl. Moreover its a fairy tale..and fairy tales are not meant to be practical…
But my cousin is someone who has his feet firmly on the ground…and guffaws at the whole idea…
A man who likes Pulp fiction and any movie which is to do with mafia….how can one expect him to like “Pretty Woman”??????
And now..it seems all clear to me…I dont know why I did such a stupid thing as to suggest him a charming ,simple “boy saves gal and the gal saves him right back” kinda movie!!
Anyways..this blog is not about Pretty Woman or my “likes only weirdo movies” cousin…its about a movie called “Sideways”.
I have a dear friend called Madhu….whom I admire ..respect and like a loooooooooooot. His love for movies is
something which makes him a very interesting companion…in spite of the fact that we like very different genre of movies..( to give an example he likes Sin City…I like terms of endearment….)
While we were chatting he told about this movie called Sideways…Which he really enjoyed..and felt that it was the kind of movie I would enjoy….
Either Madhu..has no idea abt my taste..or he has gone nuts!!!
This movie has won two Emmy awards and garnered 5 Oscar nominations.I was very excited
about it..wherever i read abt it..everyone had only praises for that movie. The movie goes something likes this-
There is one unimaginably ugly guy.In bolywood he would get to play only second fiddle to the third level
villain in a RGV movie. But then lets not discriminate against looks..after all Billy crystal is not much of a “look-er” either!
He is a school teacher who is unsuccessfully trying to get his book published. He is just divorced and not able to handle it.
He is into counseling and takes sedatives. In short he is a loser…a disgusting loser.—->loser1.
He has a friend..who during the time of dinosaurs…probably was decent looking.
Now there are more lines on his face than the number of atoms in the entire universe…and he is a faded voice-over/actor.His marriage is next week..and he wants to go out with his college buddy to go around the wine country and chase some skirts in the process. He is frivolous..and an insincere **%$**#$% ..in short he is loser..a disgusting loser—–>loser2.
So loser1 and loser2 set out..and you wait for this emmy award winning comedy to unfold and make movie watching a pure pleasure.hahahaha for your hopes!!!!
Well these two losers, talk gibberish…look tormented and make you despise them..
One is honest…stuck in the rut loser and the other one is a skirt chasing loser…and you realize that you too are nothing less than a loser for wasting 2 hrs on such a crappy movie…and regret the fact that the friend who suggested is in a far off continent for you to strangle his neck.
The loser1 is crazy abt wines…and thats the only relief in the whole movie. There is a scene in which he explains his preference for a particular wine…which is beautiful! They meet two gals(maya n stephanie)
who have roles worse/smaller than item gals in apna bollywood movies.
Maybe I am just too dumb to understand the subtletyof the humor or totally heartless to feel anything approaching compassion for the protagonists..the scene i liked was when Stephanie mouths profanities at loser2 and beats his face to pulp!!!I wish I had my hands on the director..I too would have changed the geography of his face!!!
The movie goes nowhere..its dull..insipid..boring..the characters fail to move you..Maybe some intellectuals found it amazing..soul-stirring…
But bully to all those who act condescending abt hindi movies…give me a naach gaana movie anyday over this saga of despicable worms.
I prefer the toothy grin of Julia Roberts and the suave Richard Gere any day..no more intellectual stuff please!
PS: Madhu..I suggest you dont return to India atleat for the next 3 years…
Good topic…we could have argued for atleast a couple hours on this
First of all, I did not say that “Pretty Woman” was bad…it was just okayish (compared to your idea of awesome). But, “Nottinghill” was crap! If you want to make your readers believe I am some “I-dont-believe-in-love” kind of bollywood caricature, I want to clarify. I simply loved “Before Sunrise”. Now, I wont behave like them, but I can understand them, I can empathise with them. And hey, they are not that pratical!
Coming back to the other comment, I love Satya or Godfather or Pulp Fiction not because they are gangsta movies. But, they are amazing movies! By that definition, I should have liked Scarface or Taxi driver or Heat, but I dont!
I like Amores Perros, but not Apocalypse now.
I like Memento, but not Devil’s Advocate.
I like Its Wonderful life, but not “A streetcar named desire”
I like psycho, but I hate American beauty.
I like Ordinary people, but not “Who’s afraid of Virginia Wolf”
See, there is no exact pattern to what kind of movies I like. Its all about good movies. Regarding “Sideways”, I am yet to see it. If I like it by any chance, we have a great chance to argue again
LOL !! Funny as always…
Poor Madhu.. He wont dare to suggest any movie to anyone ,anywhere in the near future !!
I know this blog would irritate you to no extent!!!Mission accomplished
so much of hate, that too for a movie????not sure what Madhu will do…..but I am sure you should go to Pakistan for further training…
STOP watching chick-flicks!! or tell all your friends to watch “what women want”.
i watched ‘kill bill’ ‘blind swordsman’ and the other jap-theme ones…not exactly my types, but once a while, while th sleep is missing on a night, it is nice to just watch such…all bhee-bhatsa jap killings, nice babmboo houses, cutest ladies in kimonos, unsavory themes…i was awake to see more kimonos!
BTW, watch this one if you get to “the little miss sunshine”, it is getting rare reviews…
will
hehehe…no da..I never hold onto anger…I just spew it all over..Imagine I saw this movie with my mom…was so grossed out..non-stop profanities…
We lost a chance to argue!
I completely agree with what you said. Saw ‘Sideways’ today…it was awfully boring and nothingness with a duration of two hours. If you failed to understand the ‘humor’ in the movie, dont worry, you are not alone!
