tip tip barsa paani….

The radio woman says its gonna rain today.I look outside the kitchen window and see puffy clouds covering
the mountain top (We have a beautiful view of mountains from our kitchen). There is a strong wind and I see trees
swaying-There is something about rains which appeals to me.I love the smell of the cool breeze just before
it starts raining..the sweet smell of the soil and the pitter-patter of falling rain.
Rain is the most sensual of all things in nature.
When I think of rains…I am moved to believe that there is a God and he is a poet!
The water in the nature could be replenished in many boring ways…but he thought of rain!
I have some very fond memories of rains…Walking back from school with the shoes in our hands.
Ya,we would walk barefoot and jump on all the puddles on our way home. You were considered lucky if some passing
vehicle splashed water all over you.We didnt worry about dirt,we just enjoyed the splash!
In my college days..I would go riding in the rain..and feel the water drops beating against my
skin..and I simply loved riding against the rain.I used to turn up in class many a times in soggy clothes.
Some days..I would sit on our window sill and look outside at water drops tracing their way down
the window.it meant that I would not want to be spoken to..and my mom would make me a cup of tea and leave me alone.
Day dreaming was made for rainy days.
There was this one rainy day when my friend Meenakshi and myself danced like nuts in the rain on our terrace.
Then we sat in the heavy rain and spoke about inane things. That rainy day sealed our friendship for life.
The first rain in any love story is crucial. My first rain with Saif after we started seeing
each other was when he was dropping me home.Riding on a bullet in rain is an experience no one should miss.
We would stop every few mins..and then catch up with the rain clouds. It took us a very long time that day to
reach home
Rain and love- a heady mixture!
But what I love most are the songs- written about rains.Be it old songs in raag “Malhaar” or the
country songs like “Rainy Night”-I love them all.
I boot my laptop up and play my list of some rain songs..seems apt after all this talk of rain.
Rhim jim gire sawan-The Lata version; Its the happy version.I simply love the way this song has been shot.
Mousami Chaterjee and Amitabh Bachan walk alongside the mumbai beach line as the
heavens pour down on them…and the song plays in the back ground.Perfect.
Lagi aaj Sawaan mein-This might almost be my Fav rain song. Its bittersweet and nostalgic.
“Mere Saath barsaat bhi roo padi hai” croons Vinod Khanna as he remembers his lost love.I love it.
Dekho Zaro dekho barsaat-I used to love this song as a 6th std kid.I still love it as a 24yr old kid.
I would love to dance the way they did.
Aaj rapat Jaaye-Naughty..flirtatious; Amitabh Bachan and a slightly embarrassed Smita patil burn the screen-its absolutely namkeen.
I have a very fond memory associated with this song. One rainy evening we friends went atop chamundi hills.
We ran inside of a tea sop n had our fill of Chai and some hot bajjis.
By this time the rain had subsided and there was no power so..we were chatting in the dark.
Suddenly Subodh declares that he feels like dancing and runs into the center of the circle and
starts singing “Aaj rapat jaaye” and signals me to join him.He does the classic AB dance and right at that
minute the power comes on.To his chagrin there are many people who were standing around and looking
at him dancing!Subodh still blushes at that memory..but I think it was very cute of him
And the baap of all rain songs-Singing in the rain:When you think rain..you think Gene Kelly. The sheer joy the song exudes..is amazing.
In some famous movie…the guy asks another whats that about America that you love.baseball?Coca cola?
The guy answers-singing in the rain.I agree with him.
There are so many songs like this..may be I will make an entire list of rain songs..and post them.
But for now..go ahead and tell me your fav rain song while I wait for the heavens to come pouring!
I’m guessing you are in the US now… So did you get yourself a phone yet? Mail me your number when you do…
1) You know which is the first song that came to my mind? “Listen to the rhythm of the falling rain”! Even a person who does not understand English would know that its a rain song.
2) Tip tip barsa pani (of course, for obvious reasons ;))
3) Thunthuru alli neera haadu - from Amruthavarshini (drizzle and Suhasini - deadly combo)
4) Rhimjhim rhimjhim - Somehow I love this song very much (definitely the most underrated song in 1942 a love story)
